Auckland FC’s majority owner changes tack on acquisition of Portuguese club

Auckland FC’s majority owner, Bill Foley, has reportedly started talks with a second Portuguese club after failing to reach an agreement with the owners of his first target.

After his Black Knight investment group were unable to get a deal to buy Casa Pia, who play in Portugal’s top tier Primeira Liga, Foley has turned his attention to league rivals Moreirense.

Moreirense, who won the Portuguese League Cup in 2017 and have played in the Primeira Liga for most of the last two decades, are in discussions about a potential deal, reports the New York Times.

The report says no formal offer has yet been made.

Texan billionaire Foley (79) has openly promoted a vision and business strategy of building a global group of football clubs who share expertise, and opportunities to move players within the group.

The Black Knight group already owns English Premier League club Bournemouth, and has minority stakes in French Ligue 1’s Lorient and Scottish Premiership club Hibernian.

The group owns an 82% controlling stake in A-League expansion club Auckland FC.
