Auckland Sunday Football Association stage their 50th annual finals day

By Matt Hunt

Auckland’s Sunday footballers have ended their 2024 season in style, celebrating their 50th finals day at Oratia’s Parrs Park.

In ideal spring conditions, teams from the Auckland Sunday Football Association played competition finals on September 22, followed by their end-of-season prizegiving.

Gurkha … runners-up in the Premier Plate final.

Gurkha FC 0-1 AUT

The day got underway with the ASFA Premier Plate between surprise package Gurkha FC from the Championship, and AUT from the Premiership.

Favourites AUT were quickly into their stride but the Nepalese ‘keeper kept them scoreless with a string of good saves.

Gurkha were a threat on the break but it just seemed a matter of time before AUT would break through.

In fact, it took the full 90 minutes to separate the teams.

As players and spectators contemplated the prospect of extra time, the students made one last salvo and from a right wing cross, striker Samaan Teihapi steered the ball home for a last gasp winner.

AFC Bohemian Celtic 2-0 Internationale FC

The ASFA Cup Final matched the holders and re-crowned Premier champions AFC Bohemian Celtic against their nearest rivals, Internationale FC.

The Irish completed their second double with a hard-fought 2-0 win.

Having hit the post in the first 10 seconds, the Greens finally took the lead with a deflected goal just before the half hour.

Inter FC battled valiantly as the game see-sawed and chances at both ends came and went. The Bohemians got the decisive second goal with a super strike from a cutback cross in the last ten minutes, as Inter increasingly gambled.

It sealed the double for Bohemian Celtic, in a season that manager Richie O’Hanlon also took the ASFA Manager of the Year award.
