All Whites midfielder Sarpreet Singh joins Portugal’s Uniao de Leiria

New Zealand international midfielder Sarpreet Singh has signed for Portugese second division club União de Leiria.

Singh (25) has agreed a one-year contract with the club who are currently 7th in the competition after three rounds. The contract has options for two more seasons.

“I’m very happy to be here. The city is very beautiful and I’m very excited,” Singh told the club’s website.

“It’s a new challenge for me, a new country and in an ambitious team. I’m looking forward to getting started.”

Singh became a free agent after his release from German club Hansa Rostock following their relegation to Bundesliga 3.

During the European summer, he was linked with English Championship clubs Queens Park Rangers and Oxford United.

He has played in Europe since joining German giants Bayern Munich after standout performances for New Zealand at the 2019 FIFA U-20 Men’s World Cup.

Singh scored seven goals in 22 appearances for Bayern Munich’s reserves but struggled to get into their first team.

After a long battle to regain fitness after a groin injury, Auckland-born Singh was hoping to reboot his career in Germany by joining Hansa from Bayern Munich.

However, he struggled for game time and ended the 2023-24 season prematurely with a red card and suspension, after scoring against FC Schalke on May 11, 2024.

Singh was one of three overage players in New Zealand’s 2024 Olympic Games squad in France.

He is in the All Whites squad to play Mexico and the United States during the September international window.
