Auckland FC recruit former Phoenix staffer Jonathan Gould for coaching role

A-League newcomers Auckland FC have hired former Wellington Phoenix goalkeeper coach Jonathan Gould.

Gould (55) will coach the goalkeepers at Auckland FC, returning to New Zealand after a spell with English Championship club Stoke City.

So far, the club has signed one goalkeeper, All White Michael Woud.

The two-cap former Scottish international ‘keeper has had several stints in New Zealand since first arriving to play for Napier City Rovers in 1989.

Gould, who made more than 150 appearances for Scottish club Celtic as a player, made his second move to New Zealand in 2005 to coach Hawke’s Bay United and he joined the Wellington Phoenix in 2009.

Working primarily as a goalkeeper coach but also with outfield players, Gould had three spells with the Phoenix, rejoining the club from 2012-15 and then again in 2022.

In late 2022, he cut short his stay in Wellington, saying he needed to return to the United Kingdom for family reasons.

As a player, Gould had a lengthy professional career with clubs such as Celtic, West Bromwich Albion, Coventry City, Bradford City, Preston North End and Bristol City.

Head coach at Auckland FC is Steve Corica and his assistant coach is former All Whites head coach Danny Hay.
