New A-League club Auckland FC have named Japanese international Hiroki Sakai as their captain for the side’s inaugural season.

Sakai (34), who represented Japan in three FIFA World Cup campaigns and at two Olympic Games, will wear the captain’s armband for the season that starts on Saturday October 19, 2024, with the home game against Brisbane Roar.

Midfielder Jake Brimmer and defender Tommy Smith will share the vice-captaincy.

“I understand the responsibility and pride that comes with being captain of this team,” Sakai said.

“I’m excited to lead Auckland FC and work with such a talented and committed squad, including Jake and Tommy, who will play crucial roles in guiding us through the season. Together, we’re ready to take on the challenges ahead and make our supporters proud.”

Sakai was judged to be the Most Valuable Player in the 2022 AFC Champions League and has made 75 full international appearances for Japan.

Previously with Japanese club Urawa Red Diamonds, Sakai has had experience with European clubs Hannover 96 and Olympique de Marseille.

He made 96 appearances in the German Budesliga, and more than 145 appearances in France’s Ligue 1 competition.
