Promotion to Women’s Championship to be sorted in Sunday showdown

Waikato club Cambridge are one game away from nailing a women’s and men’s double promotion to the Lotto NRFL Women’s and Men’s Championships.

Cambridge’s women’s team host Onehunga Mangere United at John Kerkhof Park on Sunday needing a draw or better to earn promotion to the women’s Championship.

They go into the second leg of the promotion play-off with a 1-0 lead, thanks to a goal from Caitlyn Varcoe in the first leg a week ago.

Cambridge reached the play-offs after winning the WaiBOP W-League, while Onehunga Mangere United won this season’s NRF Women’s Conference.

If Cambridge win promotion, it will top a memorable season for the club following their men’s promotion to next season’s men’s Championship.

After winning the Lotto NRFL Southern Conference title with a perfect 21-win season, they then beat Northern Conference winners Waiheke United 2-0 on aggregate in their play-off.
