Birkenhead United honour club stalwarts with Life Memberships

Auckland’s Birkenhead United have recognised the contributions of long-time members David Williams and Keith Lesslie, granting them Life Memberships.

The pair were honoured by club members at their recent annual general meeting.

“Both have been instrumental in shaping our club’s success, on and off the pitch, for many years,” the club announced.

“Without Keith and David’s commitment, drive, and vision, Birkenhead United would not be the club it is today. Their unwavering passion for football and dedication to our community are what Life Membership is all about.

“We’re incredibly proud to have them as part of our club’s history and future.”

Keith Lesslie: ‘Keith’s impact is everywhere’

Nominating Lesslie for the membership, the club said: ‘Keith’s contributions span every corner of the club. As a player, he represented Birkenhead across multiple teams, from the 1st Team to the O-35s.

“As a coach, Keith has led every age grade team, including coaching our U-17s to the 2022 National Championship title and earning the title of NFF Junior Coach of the Year in 2019.

“His passion for developing talent doesn’t stop there — Keith has earned his C Licence and is working towards his B Licence while mentoring our next generation of coaches.

“Thanks to his leadership, our Skill Centre saw a 220% increase in registrations since 2022, with a renewed focus on inclusivity and engagement.

“Keith’s contribution goes beyond coaching — he’s had a hand in the design and delivery of some of the club’s most significant projects.

‘From designing and donating our dugouts to initiating the club’s first pitch-side hoardings, Keith’s impact is everywhere.

“He’s also been key in the design and delivery of the club’s extension and has continued to play an active role in the club’s strategic planning.

David Williams: ‘He’s been a true leader’

“David has been a true leader for Birkenhead United, both on the field and in the boardroom,” the club said.

“Over the years, he has served as secretary, vice president, and ultimately as president for four years, offering steady guidance through some of the club’s biggest moments.

“On the field, David’s involvement has included managing the 1st team and coaching across various age groups, from juniors to the 1st reserves.

“David’s vision and hard work have left a lasting legacy. Under his leadership, Birkenhead United was proud to serve as a training venue for the FIFA Women’s World Cup in 2023, and his efforts were key in delivering our recent building extension — a project that will benefit the club for generations to come.”
