Football Fern Michaela Foster to leave Phoenix for overseas opportunities

New Zealand international Michaela Foster has told the Wellington Phoenix she won’t be returning to the club for the upcoming Ninja A-League season.

The Football Ferns fullback is pursuing opportunities abroad after being an integral member of the Phoenix women’s squad for the past two seasons and becoming an A-Leagues All Star.

Foster made 38 appearances for the Nix, all but one of which were starts, scoring two goals and setting up six others.

She was a revelation in her first season as a professional after joining the Phoenix on a scholarship contract.

Foster went on to start all 18 matches during the 2022-23 A-League, primarily at left back, and dominated the club’s end-of-season awards night; named the women’s player of the year, players’ player of the year, members’ player of the year and media player of the year.

She was again one of the team’s best performers last season and showcased her versatility by playing as a centre back, wing back and midfielder as well as her usual fullback spot.

Foster’s performances for the Nix saw her called up to the Football Ferns and she was part of New Zealand’s squads at the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup and this year’s Paris Olympics.

Phoenix head coach Paul Temple has mixed emotions about Foster’s departure.

“Selfishly, I’m disappointed Mickey won’t be playing for the Nix this season,” Temple said. “But I’m also excited because I know she’s ready to take the next step in her football career.

“Mickey’s established herself as one of the best fullbacks in the A-League in just two years. She’s reliable, smart and composed, I’ve never actually seen her flustered, and she’s the ultimate pro.

“I’m sure she’ll be a success wherever she lands and her new team will be better for having Michaela Foster in their XI.”

The Wellington Phoenix said it thanked Foster for her contribution to the club over the past two seasons and wished her all the best for the future.
