WATCH: All White Ben Waine scores for Plymouth Argyle in cup tie

New Zealand international Ben Waine has eased the early season nerves of new manager Wayne Rooney by scoring Plymouth Argyle’s first goal of the season.

Waine was elevated to the Argyle starting line-up for their Carabao Cup first round tie against Cheltenham Town at Home Park, after Rooney’s discontent with his side in their 4-0 drubbing by Sheffield Wednesday in the opening fixture of the English Championship.

The former Wellington Phoenix forward found the net in the 13th minute, only to have it ruled out after a teammate was judged to have been offside.

Rooney’s faith in Waine’s selection paid off in the 62nd minute when he scored the opening goal — and the first since Rooney took charge at the club — with a simple tap in, following up the rebound from a direct free kick.
