LISTEN: Ricki Herbert says drone snooping on Ferns ‘completely inappropriate’

Former All Whites head coach Ricki Herbert says the use of drones to snoop on the Football Ferns training sessions was “completely inappropriate”.

Speaking to NewstalkZB host D’Arcy Waldegrave, Herbert said it was hard to see what the Canadians could hope to learn from using drones, other than trying to see what formations were being used in practice.

Using the drones to try to capture individual movement seemed unlikely, he said.

Herbert said he would have expected all the national teams at the Olympics to have carried out extensive analysis of opponents before arriving at the Games.

Two members of the Canadian coaching staff have been sent home after the drone incident, with one receiving an eight-month suspended jail sentence for breaching French aviation regulations.

Head coach Bev Priestman has excluded herself from the Canadian dugout for the game against New Zealand, saying she accepts responsibility for the coaching programme.
