Forward Isabel Cox has signed with New York’s Brooklyn FC who will play in the new USL Super League, meaning all five of last season’s imported players have left the Wellington Phoenix.

Cox (23) has joined the same club as departing Phoenix midfielder Hope Breslin, while defender Hailey Davidson will also play in the new United States league.

The USL Super League comprises eight franchised clubs based in six US states (New York, North Carolina, Texas, Florida, Kentucky and Washington).

The Wellington Phoenix signed five players on international visas for the 2023-24 women’s A-League season.

  • Cox, Breslin and Davidson, all Americans, have returned to the United States.
  • Leading goalscorer Mariana Speckmaier, a Venezuelan international, has joined A-League rivals Melbourne City.
  • Canadian goalkeeper Rylee Foster has left the Phoenix but her new club has not yet been identified.

The departures mean Wellington Phoenix head coach Paul Temple can recruit up to five more overseas players as he rebuilds the squad for next season.

Meanwhile, Cox told Brooklyn FC’s fans via social media: “I’m thrilled to be back playing soccer in the US, especially for Brooklyn FC

“It’s a fantastic opportunity to contribute to women’s soccer and make a positive impact on the sport. I’m excited about the challenges ahead and eager to help elevate women’s soccer to new heights.”
