Coach Chris Greenacre: ‘It’s all about giving them exposure on the world stage’

Head coach Chris Greenacre says the experience of winning the OFC U-19 Men’s Championship will enhance his players’ chances of developing into future All Whites.

Interviewed by OFC Media after New Zealand’s 4-0 win against New Caledonia in the final, Greenacre said: “These tournaments are exactly what they’re meant to be — it’s to give them exposure on the world stage,  (and) to give them experiences.

“Hopefully, when they become future All Whites, they’ve been in these situations before.”

Greenacre said the New Zealanders had used video clips from the All Whites’ win at the OFC Nations Cup to prepare at the eight-nation tournament in Samoa, and build the links between the full international squad and the U-20s.

“Keeping that connection between the age groups is really significant, you know. It’s buying into our unique culture as well.”

By reaching the final, New Zealand had qualified for next year’s FIFA U-20 Men’s World Cup in Chile.

“Again, it’s about giving them exposure on the world stage and it’s invaluable to their development,” Greenacre said.
