Attacking midfielder Bozhidar Kraev has left the Wellington Phoenix to join men’s A-League rivals Western Sydney Wanderers.

Within hours of the Phoenix confirming he was leaving, Wanderers named the Bulgarian international as the first new signing by incoming head coach Alen Stajcic, who has replaced Marko Rudan.

How Western Sydney Wanderers announced the signing on their social media channels.

“What brings me here is my personal motivation to play in a very good club, which I believe that Western Sydney Wanderers is,” Kraev said.

“I received amazing interest from the club, which made me feel like I was wanted here, which is most important for a player.

“As a player, I think I can bring a lot of creativity and experience to the team. I am a team player who can help my teammates.

“I hope I achieve a successful season individually and collectively, and bring Western Sydney Wanderers back to where I think they deserve to be – around the top teams in Australia.”

Earlier in the day, the Phoenix had issued a statement saying: “The club will not be re-signing the Bulgarian attacking midfielder for a third Isuzu UTE A-League season.”

Kraev (27) made 54 A-League appearances for the Phoenix over the past two years, scoring 13 goals and providing an assist for seven more.

Kraev was a key part of last season’s record-breaking side, which narrowly missed winning the Premiers’ Plate and finished just short of a place in the grand final.

Bozhidar Kraev is grateful for the two years he spent in the capital.

“My period in Wellington at the Phoenix has been remarkable personally and professionally,” Kraev said.

“I would like to thank all the players, coaches and staff members that I worked with, and of course all the supporters.

“I wish all the best to Giancarlo Italiano and the team for the future.”

The Phoenix said it thanked Bozhidar for his contribution to the Wellington Phoenix over the past two years and wished him and his young family all the best for the future.
