Former New Zealand goalkeeper Matt Gould signs for English club Yeovil Town

Goalkeeper Matt Gould — who was a backup for Oli Sail during the last All Whites FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign — has signed with English club Yeovil Town.

Gould (30) has joined Yeovil on a two-year contract as a player and goalkeeper coach, moving from National League rivals Altrincham.

“It’s a new challenge for me. I love doing both roles because I still love to play, but I also really enjoy coaching,” he told Yeovil Town’s YouTube channel.

Yeovil won promotion last season from the National League South to the National League which is England’s fifth tier of professional football.

Though born in England, Gould began his playing career with Hawkes Bay United in 2011, after his family moved to New Zealand.

His father, Jonathan Gould, coached at Hawkes Bay and later had three stints as goalkeeper coach with the Wellington Phoenix. He has recently been appointed goalkeeper coach at A-League expansion club Auckland FC.

Matt Gould headed to the United Kingdom in 2014, landing his first professional contract with Cheltenham Town.

He has since played for English and Scottish clubs while undertaking UEFA coaching qualifications.

In August 2022, Matt Gould suffered concussion and a fracture of his eye socket, costing him his chance of selection to the All Whites for their two-match series against Australia.
