Ferns midfielder Grace Wisnewski signs for United States club Lexington

New Zealand international Grace Wisnewski has joined Kentucky club Lexington Sporting Club who’ll play in the new USL Super League competition.

The out-of-contract Wellington Phoenix midfielder is recovering from an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury, and opted to head overseas at the conclusion of the last women’s A-League season.

Wisnewski (21) told Lexington’s website: “I’m grateful and honoured to be joining Lexington Sporting Club and the USL Super League in the inaugural season. Lexington has been an incredible club to work with so far, and I’m excited to get to work. See you all soon!”

The new competition comprises of eight franchised clubs based in six US states (New York, North Carolina, Texas, Florida, Kentucky and Washington).

Lexington’s season starts at Carolina Ascent on Augusts 25, 2024, before hosting Tampa Bay Sun on September 8.

Wisnewski’s teammate at the Phoenix, defender Hailey Davidson, has signed for USL club Dallas Trinity.

Wisnewski played her junior football with Cambridge and youth football at Hamilton Wanderers, before signing with the Phoenix in 2021.

After playing for New Zealand at U-17 and U-20 levels, she made her full international debut in 2023 and has since earned three caps for the Football Ferns.

Wisnewski is the latest young player from the Football Ferns to move to the United States.

Teenage striker Milly Clegg has joined National Women’s Soccer League club Racing Louisville, while former Wellington Phoenix midfielder Macey Fraser has joined NWSL side Utah Royals.
