Five goals, two red cards as past holders start Chatham Cup round with win

Birkenhead United are the first club to go into the third round of the 2024 Chatham Cup after beating West Coast Rangers 4-1 in a match that left both sides with only 10 players on the pitch.

Opening the second rounds with a floodlit game at their Shepherds Park, the 2016 and 2018 cup holders went into half-time with a 2-1 lead.

Former All Whites striker Monty Patterson opened the scoring for Birkenhead but was sent off in the first half for violent conduct.

Rangers goalkeeper Damian Hirst, playing against his former club, was sent off in the 59th minute for serious foul play.

Technical issues prevented FIFA+’s planned live stream of the match.

The rest of the second round will see 31 ties played between Friday and Monday, over the King’s Birthday Weekend.
